2012 Oscar Winner ‘Django Unchained’

Django Unchained

A Quentin Tarantino film about a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) who frees a slave (Jamie Foxx) and the two unleash violence across the South. Waltz, nominated for Best Supporting Actor, steals almost every scene and carries this movie from town to town. Strong performances delivered by Leo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson–but both don’t appear until too l…ate in the movie. My ‘Tarantino watermark’ remains “Pulp Fiction” and this movie doesn’t rise to that level of film-making; after a sluggish start it’s not until the last hour that this picture reaches a full gallop. At times the film takes on a distinct feel as a spoof to viewers taking us back to the 1960s westerns. The music was above average and perhaps the movie’s best quality. Overall, I expected better from Tarantino and left disappointed for an Academy Award ‘Best Picture’ nominee.

Grade: DB- The D is silent.

UPDATE: ‘Django Unchained’ was nominated for 5 Academy Awards (including for Best Picture, Cinematography, and Best Sound Editing). Christoph Waltz won his second Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and Tarantino won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.
