Did William Shatner just fire ‘Star Trek 3’ director?

Variety reports that Roberto Orci is no longer occupying the director’s chair for “Star Trek 3”;

Roberto Orci is giving up the helm of the USS Enterprise, and will no longer direct the third installment of Paramount Pictures’ “Star Trek” franchise, sources confirmed to Variety.

Orci wrote the first two films in the series. The reason for his departure was unclear.

Unclear?  How about this theory…Captain Kirk himself, aka William Shatner, Photon torpedoed Orci after a conversation between the two in recent days over a potential Shatner role in “Star Trek 3”.

As I reported last week, “Star Trek: Into the Darkness” director J.J. Abrams had spoken with Shatner and set up a follow-up conversation between then-director Orci and the Priceline.com spokesman.  It’s here, that perhaps Shatner didn’t feel comfortable with Orci’s vision on the film, or, maybe felt that if he were going to agree to do “Star Trek 3” it needed to include a director Shatner wanted.  Pure speculation–but enough intel dots exist to connect Shatner to the film’s shakeup at director.  Confirmation of this theory will be evidenced with strong denials from Shatner’s side in coming days and weeks, followed shortly by an announcement from Paramount Pictures that Shatner is fully on-board “Star Trek 3”.
