The first trailer for next summer’s sequel to “Independence Day” has come out…
Count me among the unimpressed.
The first problem appears to be the planet’s reliance on the U.N. Secondly, the trailer looks, and sounds, too much like its original back during the Clinton Administration. Yes, it’s been twenty years. Two, zero. When it comes to science-fiction movies in the 21st Century, I think of two distinct storytelling camps. One, the Michael Bay “Transformers” explosive diarrhea versions…which is what this looks like to me. A re-boot of an earlier time that seems out-of-place today. And the other filmmaking camp, a more meticulous, thoughtful mind bender–sorta like J.J. Abrams (“Star Trek Into Darkness”, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”) or a Ridley Scott (“Alien”, “The Martian”).
I get it. The original, in 1996, brought in over $800M at the box office. And that’s really what has caused this “resurgence” from an old favorite. Yawn.
