Just a few of my quick thoughts after last night’s showing of “Black Mass”…
A chilling Johnny Depp gives us his most transformative performance to date. Intimidating and powerful throughout, he effortlessly calls all the shots. The unrecognizable Depp owns every scene, either with his commanding presence or from being the subject discussed by others. A rich ensemble cast shines exceptionally bright, bringing this 1970s South Boston true story of corruption and racketeering full-circle. The elaborate plot weighs childhood loyalties against a professional duty to act, requiring patience by viewers for just over 2 hours–as deals are brokered and broken. Grade: B
