When was the last time we saw Richard Gere this beat up? In 1982, during An Officer and A Gentleman, where Lou Gossett Jr. (playing a U.S. Marine Corps Gunnery Sergeant) drilled Candidate Zach Mayo into the ground at Officer Training School? Or was it back during 1996’s Primal Fear, as hotshot attorney Martin Vail, when Edward Norton’s altar boy character let Gere in on his inside joke? Tough call.
This upcoming movie will put homelessness under the microscope with magnification set to 400x. “Am I homeless?” is the question, but the premise is whether homeless people exist and how one person deals with their plight. Will Gere’s character help save himself? Or will it take others, willing to step up and help those down on their knees, to get Gere back up on his feet again? Either one of those scenarios, or a combination of them, could tell a very compelling story.
This film stars Ben Vereen, Jena Malone (The Hunger Games) and Mrs Kevin Bacon (FYI; married to the Footloose shaker now for 27+ years) – aka Kyra Sedgwick from TNT’s The Closer. Time Out of Mind opens in all theaters on September 11th.
I think this movie will deftly show the circumstances surrounding one man’s downward slide into homelessness. The key to this film’s success, and its connection with viewers, will be if Gere’s character can right his ship in a believable way? If they can accomplish that difficult task, Time Out of Mind stands to be a powerful emotional and inspirational journey for moviegoers. With Oscar potential.
What do you think? Does this movie look interesting?
